Definition

The timeline shows every parametric feature in creation order. Each tile is a feature you can edit, suppress, reorder, delete. Right-click a feature for context options. A red-x feature has lost its references and needs to be redefined.

Fusion 360 also supports History Off mode (Design > Do not capture Design History) — features are direct-edited without a timeline, useful for imported geometry and one-off edits. You can toggle between modes per file.

Why it matters

Timeline hygiene determines whether a Fusion 360 file remains editable. A 200-feature unstructured timeline takes minutes to recompute and is impossible to refactor. Group related features under named folders; delete dead exploration; rename critical features by intent.

Common pitfalls

  • Leaving exploratory features in the timeline long after they've been replaced.
  • Never grouping — the timeline becomes scrollable infinitely.
  • Toggling history off mid-design — features after the toggle don't replay on parameter change.

Parametric history you can scrub

With Capture Design History on, Fusion records every operation as an ordered node on the Timeline at the bottom of the canvas. Dragging the marker rolls the model back and forth; double-clicking a node re-opens that operation for editing, and dependent downstream features recompute. Right-click nodes to reorder, suppress, or roll edits, and group related nodes to keep long histories readable.

Parametric vs. direct trade-off

Turning history off switches Fusion into direct modelling — no timeline, faster edits on imported or messy geometry, but no parametric replay. Keep history on for design intent and configurations; switch off (or use a base feature) when working with large imported bodies where a full history would be costly.
