Product Overview

ArchiCAD by Graphisoft (Nemetschek Group) was one of the first commercial BIM applications, released in 1987. It introduced the "Virtual Building" concept — a full 3D building model from which plans, sections, elevations, and schedules are automatically generated.

ArchiCAD is architecture-focused rather than engineering-general, which gives it a streamlined workflow for building design. The software runs natively on both Windows and macOS — one of very few professional BIM tools with full Mac support. Its Teamwork collaboration system allows multiple architects to work on the same project file simultaneously over a LAN or WAN.

Key Strengths

  • Open BIM leadership: Native IFC support with certified import/export, BCF-based issue management, and active participation in buildingSMART standards development.
  • Algorithmic design: Integration with Grasshopper via the Rhino-Archicad Connection, enabling parametric and algorithmic design workflows that push geometry back into the BIM model.
  • Publisher workflows: Automated batch output of drawings, renderings, and models through Publisher Sets — reducing manual effort in document production.

Frequently asked questions (3)

How do I configure hotlinked modules in Archicad?

Go to File > External Content > Place Hotlinked Module, select the source file (PLN or MOD), and configure translation and layer options.

What is the best way to export IFC files for Revit coordination?

Use the built-in 'Export to Revit' IFC translator, which optimizes Archicad classification mappings to Revit category classes.

How do I automate layout numbering in Publisher Sets in Archicad?

Use Archicad's Auto-Text templates in your Master Layouts. The layout book will automatically sequence sheet numbers during publish.

Question 1

When evaluating Archicad for your design workflow, which of the following is a primary consideration?

Competitive Positioning

Archicad competes primarily with Autodesk Revit in the architectural BIM market. While Revit dominates in larger multi-disciplinary firms due to Autodesk's ecosystem integration, Archicad maintains strong positions in design-focused practices that value creative freedom and macOS support.

vs. Revit: Archicad offers faster 3D navigation, native macOS support, and more intuitive modeling for architects. Revit has deeper structural/MEP integration and a larger third-party ecosystem. Archicad's Teamwork server enables true multi-user editing without Revit's worksharing synchronization bottlenecks.

vs. Vectorworks: Both serve architecture-focused firms, but Archicad targets mid-to-large practices with complex documentation needs, while Vectorworks serves smaller firms and landscape architects. Archicad's BIM depth exceeds Vectorworks' hybrid 2D/3D approach.

vs. Allplan: Both are Nemetschek Group products. Allplan focuses on structural engineering and German-speaking markets. Archicad targets architectural design globally with stronger visualization and creative tools.

Use Cases & Industry Applications

  • Residential architecture: Multi-story residential projects benefit from Archicad's zone-based area calculations, energy modeling integration, and automatic schedule generation from model data.
  • Cultural & institutional buildings: Museums, theaters, and universities use Archicad's freeform modeling (Morph tool) combined with curtain wall systems for complex facade designs.
  • Interior design: The Library Parts system with parametric furniture, fixtures, and finishes supports detailed interior documentation directly within the BIM model.
  • Renovation & heritage: Archicad's Renovation Filter separates existing, demolished, and new elements—critical for heritage projects requiring phased documentation showing original fabric versus interventions.
  • BIM coordination: Firms use Archicad as their architectural authoring tool while coordinating with structural (Tekla, STAAD) and MEP (Revit MEP, MagiCAD) consultants via IFC and BCF workflows.
