Definition
When a feature loses a reference (deleted edge, suppressed parent, missing sketch) SOLIDWORKS reports a rebuild error on next rebuild (Ctrl+B / Ctrl+Q). The What's Wrong dialog lists offending features. Resolution options: redefine the reference (Edit Feature), suppress the broken feature, or delete and rebuild.
Why it matters
Rebuild discipline determines how quickly a design can iterate. A part where every edit causes ten downstream errors is unworkable; a part where edits propagate cleanly is the parametric promise made real.

- Suppressing the offending feature instead of fixing the reference — error accumulates over time.
- Editing dimensions without rebuilding immediately — multiple errors batch together and become harder to diagnose.
- Building features off temporary construction geometry that gets deleted — every dependent feature breaks.
Why the feature tree breaks
Most rebuild errors are dangling references: a sketch relation or feature pointed at an edge/face that no longer exists after an upstream change, so the reference turns dangling (shown with a red/yellow overlay). Common triggers are deleting a parent face, reordering features past their parents, or importing dumb geometry and then editing it. The tree evaluates top-down, so a single early break cascades into many downstream warnings.
A repeatable triage
1) Read the first error, not the last — fixing the topmost usually clears the rest. 2) Right-click the feature > What's Wrong for the full diagnostic list. 3) Use Display/Delete Relations to find and repair dangling sketch relations. 4) Force a full rebuild with Ctrl+Q (vs Ctrl+B which only rebuilds changed features) to confirm the fix is stable. 5) Prevent recurrence by referencing planes and datums instead of transient faces.
