Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is a symbolic language (governed by ASME Y14.5 and ISO 1101/GPS) for defining allowable variation of form, orientation, location, and runout on engineering drawings and 3-D models. It replaces ambiguous ±coordinate dimensioning with functional controls tied to datums.
Core controls include flatness, straightness, position, profile, perpendicularity, and runout, each shown in a feature control frame. Material condition modifiers (MMC/LMC) allow bonus tolerance, and datum reference frames establish how the part is measured.
Why It Matters
GD&T communicates design intent unambiguously so parts made in different factories fit and function. It also enables larger, cheaper tolerances where function allows (bonus tolerance under MMC), reducing scrap.

- Use position with MMC for holes/pins to gain bonus tolerance where fit allows.

Industry Standards Comparison: ASME Y14.5 vs. ISO 1101
While both ASME Y14.5 (predominant in North America) and ISO 1101 / ISO GPS (predominant in Europe and Asia) define geometric tolerancing, critical differences exist in default rules:
- Rule #1 (Envelope Principle): ASME Y14.5 defaults to Rule #1, where a feature of size's surface cannot extend beyond its Maximum Material Condition (MMC) boundary. ISO 1101 defaults to independence principle (ISO 8015), requiring explicit Envelope symbol (Ⓔ) if boundary restriction is intended.
- Datum References: ASME uses primary, secondary, and tertiary datums with physical simulator contact. ISO GPS relies on geometrical operations (associated features) to establish datum reference frames.
